I use .490 RB 70 grs 2FG. Bear are no harder to kill than a deer. your .62 load is fine. I use 70 for that too. Ive killed 14 bear. The ,400 lbs was with one shot from a 30-30 94 winchester.

Shine is right, bear aren't hard to kill. That is, if you get a good double lung shot, or put one behind the ear.
But I've seen a lot of guys screw up on bear. You don't need a 'magnum,' but I like a load that will break some bone if you get a bad angle.
I always liked 100 grains of FFG Goex in a .50 round ball gun, though 70 grains is plenty, if you hit them in the right place.
85 grains in your .62 will do the job.
Personally, I always preferred a ground blind to a tree stand.

I've sot a bunch of bear over the years. I've shot a couple in the head, one in the neck and the rest double lung. I have never used more than 70 grains of 3f, but thats my preference. The key is know your gun, stay calm and squeeze the trigger. If you double lung them you will hear the moan. The first time I heard it it was raining and I was losing light fast. It did make the hair stand up on the back of my neck! I had to follow the path from the cornfield through a thick patch of blackberry bushes. Once I got through the thick stuff I saw a nice bear strecthed out dead. He was killed with a maxi. Round ball is fine, they don't know the difference. Ground blinds can work but you have to be as close to scent free as possible. Bear will circle the bait site before coming in.Don't shoot the first bear that comes in if its a big one, could be momma bear and the cubs are out of sight waiting for her ok. 50 yards is a bit long for a head shot in lowlight conditions,go for the double lung shot, its just 50-75 yards more of a drag! Thanks much! This is one of those "bucket list" items that I think I'll take advantage of while I can. I'm going to burn some powder this week and decide which gun goes with me.
