Originally just used to describe boys skipping school, dates to pre-civil war. Mostly thought to be from the Dutch hoekje which is "hide and seek". Probably not from sneaking off to go fishing.

That smoothbore Charlie said I had to take good care of it, so when I shoot it smells funny then I remember it has to be cleaned twice once at canton and again at home, so I always remember to take it home. You can look at it again Monday.
