I decided to go out yesterday evening and see what I could see.. Well I am an opportunist and a meat hunter. Had what I thought was a small doe at the time move through the brush, I took the shot.. The deer crashed off.. sort of a wobbly, stumble, run up the creek. It was getting dark so I decided to let it lay and I would return in the morning for it. Well it was a bit of adventure.. ended up being a button buck.. Last night the shot broke both front legs just below the chest.. (nicked it).. I went up the creek looking for it no hair, no blood. Followed the tracks to where I thought it went.. jumped it.. Deer are some of the toughest animals I have seen.. It ran away from me.. I started to stalk noticed that it wasn't moving right. I finally caught sight of it through a bunch of brush.. Took a "hope I hit it shot" it got up and moved farther away from me.. I reloaded again and after playing cat and mouse a few more times I decided to leg it out. Chased it for about 30 yards, it stopped and I took a knee and got a clean shot. Bad shots happen.. could have been a flinch could have been brush. Glad that I stuck with it and did not push it last night.

Bad shots happen, but good follow up technique will bring the meat to the table. I wish that we could teach more hunters not to take right off and chase a wounded deer.
Good work, Roy!

Damn skippy.. but damn good on the table
Our button bucks usually dress out at around 40 lbs.. I know if you see one up there they are around 70.. Normally that is what a mature doe will weigh here when field dressed..
easy to carry out this size too...

Way to stick with it Roy, high marks for that. I'm a meat hunter too, we have less meat in the woods, more meat on our women ;D ;DI carried your fowler loaded with buck in my swamp yesterday, the swamp just gets thicker.

Well let's see... I've put a .610 hole in a buffalo, .715 holes in a big pig, and an .835 hole in a red deer......... To be honest though, the buffalo that I shot with the .610 Roy gun was the only one that went down for good with the first shot. I like Tom's little deer shooters. It's just that I thought that canoe guns went out with the early 19th century.

The question is when is the last time you killed something and I'm not counting lice. Had to laugh when I heard Tom got this deer as I know how the phone call went. Tom has a bad neck and arthritis and can not handle a heavy gun or the recoil but is still one heck of a hunter.
" Roy, come help" means Roy come drag it out and process it. That was yesterday morning, then last evening Tom got a nice doe. "Roy come help" I think Roy was one tired kid today.
I think it was Tom's first two-fer day hunting.

The last thing I killed that was bigger than a partridge was probably that buffalo two years ago. But then....I don't have a Roy to do my dragging for me! ;D I'm glad that Tom has a good system going. And he is obviously still a hell of a shot!

I like short light Mannlicher stocked guns Yep .260 rem... 100 grn bullet does a number on the deer. Think that gun weighs around 5 1/2 lbs with the scope and mounts lol.. He is slowly finishing up a .270 with an FN action in a Mannlicher stock.. I am pretty sure that this will be his last gun. I will have to take it out west and shoot something big with it lol

Nate I have cut the throat of every deer that was not dead when I walked up to it. There is a method. This idiot did not know it, nor do you. Or you would not have soiled a good thread with this junk.
